Casino Royale was released in 2006 and is the first movie of the James Bond film series with Daniel Craig playing James Bond. THE MAN:

James Bond is a true cultural icon and doesn’t really need a big introduction, so we all know he is a stylish secret agent working for MI6. He is in his thirties or forties and a very good marksman with vices like drinking, gambling and women. At age 11, his parents died in a mountain climbing accident and he grew up as orphaned child.

Still in this movie, he is portrayed a little differently, because Casino Royale stands on its own and isn’t connected to any earlier films of the series regarding its narrative framework and timeline. That allows the film makers to present to the audience not just Bond as an invulnerable action hero with silly gadgets, but an actual character at the beginning of his career who makes rookie mistakes like blowing up an entire embassy.

THE WATCHES:

There’s two watches you see him wearing in Casino Royale that are both from Omega.

During the parkour chase scene at the beginning he is sporting an Omega Planet Ocean Big Size reference 2900.50.91. It’s a professional divers’ watch and water-resistant up to a depth of 600m. It’s also got a 45mm diameter case and since James Bond is pursuing a bomb maker, this scene’s all about action and destroying things, so a huge watch that can take a beating is a must to survive these kind of circumstances. Also a bigger watch goes well when wearing a t-shirt and since the scene is set in Madagascar where it’s extremely hot all day, it fits Bond’s outfit.

Bond is wearing his timepiece on a black rubber strap, which is kind of cool because all the professional watches mostly come with metal bracelets and so the rubber strap is not as mainstream and is a bit more understated, especially considering he’s in a poorer country where it’s harder to keep precious things under the radar.

Later on in the movie, there’s the famous train scene, where Bond meets the treasury employee Vesper Lynd for the first time. Now, he is wearing an Omega Seamaster Diver 300m reference 2220.80.00 along with a nice suit and it’s a more formal setting at the dinner table, so the Seamaster diver is definitely a fitting option since it’s a bit smaller with 41mm in size, but still meant for diving and at the same time a little more dressy than the Planet Ocean, especially with the polished elements of its metal bracelet. His Seamaster Diver can also be seen at the end of the movie as illustrated in the picture above, where he is grieving for Vesper, after she was killed by the organisation behind Le Chiffre.

CONCLUSION:

James Bond is definitely right about wearing sports watches. He’s always got to be ready to throw everything away and engage in physical activities like fighting a sudden attacker or jumping into the water. Still, I don’t like the idea of Omega selling their watches by using the James Bond film series as a marketing machine and destroying a very long tradition of James Bond wearing a Rolex watch. Even Daniel Craig wears one when he is not playing his character and the same goes for Bond’s creator Ian Fleming who wore a stainless steel Rolex Explorer in real life. He even said James Bond should wear nothing but Rolex. Therefore, Eon Productions should have never signed a contract with a watch manufacturer other than Rolex and Rolex would never sign a contract like that anyway.

  Most of Casino Royale was shot in the beautiful and relatively inexpensive Czech Republic -- primarily in Prague’s fabled Barrandov Studios, known as the 'Hollywood of the East' for its use in films including Mission Impossible, the Bourne Identity and Amadeus. However there are only a few opportunities every year to tour the studio and its costumes department.

  A more accessible location is Prague’s open-to-the-public Strahov Monastery library, which stands in for an interior committee room of London’s Parliament in a scene with M, played by Judi Dench. The city's international airport, Ruzyne, (and the Nassau airport in the Bahamas) features in the film as the airport in Miami, Florida. The exterior of Prague’s Ministry of Transport and the interior of Vitkov Monument’s history museum in Vitkov Park were the shooting locations of the film’s Miami Body Worlds exhibit. And the lobby of the Venetian hotel where 007 and Bond girl Vesper Lynd stay is actually Prague's National Museum on Wenceslas Square, currently closed for reconstruction and scheduled to reopen in June 2016.

  About a two hour drive west of Prague -- faster if you are a fictional British secret agent -- is the picturesque Bohemian spa-town of Karlovy Vary, which takes on the role of the small European country of Montenegro, part of Yugoslavia in Ian Fleming’s day. The city’s most historic and beautiful spa, the-closed-to-the-public Lázně I (or Spa 1, formerly known as Kaiserbad), located on Mírové náměstí, was used as the exterior of the titled Casino Royale. The outside is all a traveller is likely to see of it now; except for rare occasions, it has been closed for the last decade awaiting funds for renovation. Just a few hundred metres away is the high-end Grandhotel Pupp, which served as Bond and Lynd’s Hotel Splendide in the film. If you had your heart set on actually going to Montenegro, there is a real Hotel Splendid in the coastal town of Becici, with posh rooms overlooking the Adriatic Sea.
